To best serve the residents at Knollwood, one must start with a stellar group of staff and a leadership team that understands what it takes to help older adults lead purposeful and fulfilling lives.

Meet Gary Hibbs, a senior living professional whose decades of experience and unique leadership style is helping him do just that, with years of proven commitment under his belt.

The father of four, and grandfather of one, began his career in senior living services after earning his Juris Doctor (JD), working as an attorney and legal aid for aging adults. He brought that expertise to his later work as a nursing administrator, further bolstered by a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Maryland.

Building on his passion for helping seniors live safe and fulfilling lives, Gary went on to hold several influential leadership positions, including: Executive Director for Riderwood Village, the nation’s largest Continuing Care Retirement community in Silver Spring, MD; and as Northeast Regional Executive Director for Erickson, overseeing operations in multiple states.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic—a challenging time for many industries, and in particular, the senior living industry—his results-driven leadership style guided Erickson towards achieving positive financial outcomes, high occupancy rates, not to mention enhanced employee and resident engagement.

This dedication can be seen throughout all of Gary’s work, and is an integral part of Knollwood’s “leadership by example” philosophy.

“Gary is an accomplished, strategic leader who brings a unique combination of career experiences that align nicely with the values and the mission of Knollwood,” says General Jack M. Keane, USA (Ret.), Chairman, Army Distaff Foundation, the non-profit that owns and operates Knollwood. “His established track record in steering retirement communities through the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic, while achieving consistent positive financial outcomes and high levels of occupancy, proves his level of understanding of the everchanging senior living industry.”

Hibbs’s commitment to ongoing education and development within the industry can be seen in his work as an Adjunct Professor with The Erickson School of Aging at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), his role on the John Maxwell Leadership Team, and the recent founding of his own leadership development company, Unleashed to Lead, LLC.

The Army Distaff Foundation couldn’t be happier to have someone of Gary’s character and caliber to help lead Knollwood into the next era of comprehensive senior living.
