Our program provides a flexible, person-centered approach, designed specifically to benefit residents who are between the moderate to moderately severe stages of dementia (stages 4 through 6 as described by the Alzheimer’s Association). The therapeutic recreation and care provided in the Special Care Center encourage meaningful interactions and promote much-needed sensory stimulation through an array of activities, such as music and arts therapies, reminiscence groups and aromatherapy sessions. Like the Health Services Center, the Special Care Center is licensed as a skilled nursing center, and all beds are Medicare and Medicaid-certified. However, the Special Care Center programming is designed to engage higher-functioning residents with memory impairments who are able to participate and benefit from the cognitive therapies offered.

Ekso Bionics® Exoskeleton Mobility Program at Knollwood

The EksoGT™ is a wearable robotic suit that enables individuals with any amount of lower extremity weakness or paralysis to stand and walk. It helps patients relearn the correct step patterns and weight shifts involved in walking, and potentially mitigating compensatory behaviors.

The EksoGT’s SmartAssist™ software allows physical therapists to determine how much power is provided to either side of the person’s body. This balances the physical effort that the person exerts with the amount of help that he or she needs to achieve a more normalized gait. It also makes the device suitable for a broad spectrum of neuro-rehabilitation activities and keeps individuals challenged as they progress through their rehabilitation.

For patients who thought they would never be able to walk or stand again, the EksoGT provides hope for greater mobility and independence.

EksoGT Indications for Use:

The patient must have lower extremity weakness or paralysis resulting from:

  • Spinal Cord Injury
  1. Motor complete paralysis C7 or below
  2. Motor incomplete with functional bilateral upper extremity strength or functional strength in one          upper extremity and one lower extremity
  • CVA/Stroke
  • Hemiparesis or Hemiplegia
  • Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Guillain- Barre Syndrome
  • Generalized weakness caused by other conditions
