Thelma M., a longtime resident of Knollwood, is an enthusiastic member of our community. Her connections to our nation’s armed forces run deep, as she is both the widow and daughter of Army officers, and her stepson was an officer in the Air Force. She also has connections to our community, as both her mother-in-law and her aunt lived at Knollwood. Through the experiences of her mother-in-law and aunt, Thelma has seen the evolution of the Army Distaff Foundation into the community it is today, and she is glad to live here.

“It’s a warm, vibrant place, full of wonderful people who have served our nation in war and peace,” Thelma said.

Getting involved on and off campus

As Thelma said, Knollwood is a vibrant place where our residents engage in many activities and can enjoy the unique opportunities enabled by our Washington, D.C., location. For example, Thelma is a member of the senior advisory committee, which was established by the area’s representative on the Washington, D.C., City Council. With her involvement, the committee creates policies that improve the lives of seniors in the District. Thelma is also chair of the association’s external affairs committee, which reaches out to the surrounding community in Northwest D.C. to promote good relations.

Thelma also has stayed active within the Knollwood community. She is a former president of the Knollwood Residents Association, which meets monthly to promote residents’ interests and works with our management to ensure excellent services for all. Day to day, Thelma enjoys the many activities made possible by living at Knollwood.

“We have interesting in-house lectures, classes in the arts, musical programs, plus active trips and tours,” she said. Thelma also holds highly the daily scheduled trips offered by Knollwood to nearby Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Comfort and care

“All of our needs are taken care of,” Thelma said. “We also have the best management and staff that one could wish for.”

Like many Knollwood residents, it’s evident that Thelma appreciates the peace of mind that comes with living at our community. If she ends up needing healthcare, she won’t need to worry about moving or traveling away from home to obtain what she needs.

On campus, Knollwood provides a full continuum of care, including independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing services all in a convenient and comfortable residential setting.
